How is it that Homestuck fanart, which usually consistently adds a few years to a character’s apparent age, does the complete opposite with Mituna and makes him look like he’s 13?
And not just the fanart, either. There is entirely too much fic and too much meta by people who think reducing him to the agency of a 4-yr-old, even in a romantic and sexual context, is somehow cute.
That shit it not cute. That shit is infantilizing. Yes, Mituna has a lot of difficulty expressing himself. His dialogue is garbled and partially incoherent, but it has complexity. He has a sense of humor, he has sass, he can honestly be kind of a jerkwad.
When you dial down the random swearing and give him all the personality of a puppy dog or pre-k kid, (*cough* “If found please return to Kurloz” *cough*), then you are erasing his character and replacing it with what amounts to nothing more than a plushie, something cute that doesn’t have an actual agenceny. Which is ableist.
And no, this is not a sole purview of the dreaded yaois. I have seen this shit happen with Latula/Mituna at least as much as with any Mituna/male pairing.
Just stop. If you’re going to call him cute, don’t forget that he’s someone beyond that sole characteristic.
